High school commencement advice (and must-see video): “You are not special.”

You Are Not Special Commencement Speech from Wellesley High School – YouTube.

Watch how the enjoyment of the early part of the speech gradually transforms into puzzlement – is he really saying this? – and very ambiguous applause at the end. Yet  the message is one that should be heard much more often. He absolutely nails what’s wrong with the values we are imparting to our kids: in a world in which everyone gets a trophy, the trophy becomes  valueless. A powerful message against the feeling-good-trumps-actually-doing-anything ideology that seems to be dominating so much of our education system today.
